CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Religion is a system of symbols, composed of beliefs and practices,
developed in a communal setting, often institutionally legitimated, which
negotiates and interacts with a power or force that is experienced as within and
beyond the self and group, this power or forces is most often referred to as God
or spirits. The symbolic and social boundaries of religion mobilize group identity
and at time; conflict and even violence within and between group. (James K.
Wellman Jr., ed. Lanham. (2007). Religion and Violence across Time and
Tradition.http://www.Ohrd.wisc.edv/onlinetraining/resolution/aboutwhatisit.htm.
March10.2008).
Religion is a belief to have of every human or every individual in the
world to God. And a person has a freedom to choose their belief. For example in
our country Indonesia. A person has a fundamental law to choose their belief or
their religion. Even our country has a protection to a person to choose their
religion.
Religion is also important because as a central part of many individual
identities, any threat to one very being. This is primary motivation for religion
nationalist. Religion is a human phenomenon that defies easy definition. It is
commonly understood as belief or attitudes concerning an object (real or
imagined), person (real or imagined), or system or thought considered to be
supernatural, sacred, or divine, and the moral codes, practices, values, institution,
and rituals associated with such belief or system of thought. It is sometimes used
interchangeably with “faith” or belief system in the course of the development of
religion. It has taken many forms in various culture and individuals. (Guy
Lancaster (2007) Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture
http://www.google.co.id/searc?hl=id&q+definition+of+conflict+religion&meta.
March 10, 2008).
Many religions also have different doctrine, which can be conflict.
Believers are called upon to spread the world of God and increase the number of
the flock. For the example is the effort to impose Christian on subject people was
an important part of the conflict surrounding European Colonization. Similarly, a
group may seek to deny other religion the opportunity to practice their faith. In
part, this is part of the desire to minimize belief the dominant group feels to be
dangerous. Conflict has meanings:
1. An open clash between two opposing groups (or individual).
2. Opposition between two simultaneous but incompatible feelings.
3. A hostile meeting of opposing military forces in the course of a war.
4. A state of opposition between person or ideas or interests.
5. An incompatibility of dates or events.
6. Opposition in a work of drama or fiction between character and forces
(especially an opposition that motivates the development of the plot).
7. A disagreement or argument about something important.
(Guy Lancaster (2007) Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture
http://www.google.co.id/searc?hl=id&q+definition+of+conflict+religion&me
ta. March 10, 2008).
Conflict is a state of opposition, disagreement or incompatibility between
two or more people or groups of people, which are sometimes characterized by
physical violence military conflict between states, may constitute war.

person or each religion has belief and different ways. For the example is religion
conflict in the story of Kingdom of Heaven (Crusade) by Ridley Scott. In this
movie has a message, as well as. Irronically, a film about one of the most
intolerant periods of human history. Although the Arabs and Christian slaughter
each other by the thousand during the course of the story, it is ultimately a sense
of mutual respect and understanding that avoid a final massacre.
The writer is interested in analyzing the movie because the writer wants
to discuss about relation between Arab and Christian land, they are want to live
together. And Balian, he did not look after his land but Balian wishes to get a
freedom and leave together with Arab. And the story can not tell about the ending
of the story because no one knows is the winner in the war.
